I love Gogol as a writer of humor, folk tales and satirist. I am familiar with the folk tales concerning witches, rituals of reading over the dead bodies. I especially enjoyed the story in Russian because you do not miss the fine "details" of the culture and the people in the countryside. In the original, the status of women is so glaring and so vicious demeaning. The seminary student' s murder of the old woman turned young dead woman shows that women's lives were not even worth considering. The entire story is more a hallucination perhaps drug induced. The tale inspired countless horror movies.
